Words from Geela Saviakjuk

Every month IIKELC is highlighting inspiring and uplifting stories from Nunavummiut across the territory. This month we are proud to celebrate Kendall Aknavigak! Please enjoy her story below…

“My name is Geela Saviakjuk and I am from Rankin Inlet. I believe leadership is about inspiring others and leading by example to reach a common goal. A leader is someone who encourages and supports people to reach their full potential while providing support every step of the way.

I was inspired to take a leadership role in my community by the youth as well as other individuals who do not know where to go to ask for help and support. I try to be positive and motivate youth and all individuals to support one another. I do this by listening and understanding what someone wants to accomplish and support them in advocating for a group or cause.

If I had to give advice to tomorrow’s leaders I would say that trial and error are one of the best ways to learn. You can only get better when you do work, it takes time, and you will get it. Make the accomplishment you can achieve and never give up.”
